For those of you who’ve known me, you know that I had a blog called Dare to Glam for years. I started this fashion-based blog right before I left for college. Throughout the years I did some style posts but it also evolved into posting personal stories. I would forget about it, but always come back to it.
This January I decided I wanted to become serious about Dare to Glam. The amount of research I found and the workshops I took gave me an immense amount of knowledge that I would’ve never discovered. But in taking a more active role with this blog, I decided it wasn’t working for me.
I was trying to squeeze too many subjects into a blog that I made six years ago. I was trying to fit posts that weren’t aligning with the brand. The topics I wanted to discuss – life and empowerment and the small moments – they weren’t fitting into a blog originally made to discuss fashion.
Running around to monetize a blog based on fashion ended up burning me out. I was forcing myself to style shoots rather than doing it out of enjoyment. Creating content for the sake of creating content was overwhelming me. I found that I wanted to spend my time becoming a better writer about my personal posts and sharing captivating moments in life.
So where did Between the Alleys come from? Well I always thought that I need to either change my name or rebrand because of the misalignment with my posts and blog name. A few weeks ago before I left for my travels abroad, I wanted to create a new Instagram page dedicated to architecture, art, and alleyways. There’s something magical I’ve always found within those topics.
I decided that I would build a blog to go along with it, focusing solely on travelers and their stories while writing my personal essays to be picked up by a bigger platform so I could have a larger audience reach. It hadn’t even been a week until I came back from my travels realizing that I missed having a place to post my personal words, not just submitting them to other websites. That’s where the concept of stories + aesthetics combined.
I feel like the small moments have really defined my life these past couple of months. I enjoy wandering in lesser-known places and finding hidden gems. Between the Alleys can be taken literally and figuratively. Literally by my love of capturing snapshots of my travel adventures, and figuratively with my unfolding thoughts.
I can hear one word, see one photograph, read one simple article, and my thoughts start flowing into posts. Just a twenty-something who sees the world from a different perspective.
I still desire to work within the fashion industry professionally and I hope to be able to incorporate some style shoots within these posts without chasing a monetary goal as I was previously. For now, I want to let my words inspire.
The best compliment I have ever received was from someone close to me. They said, “You are a woman of depth and substance.”
I hope that this blog offers exactly that: depth and substance.
